  • About Karachi

Karachi is the largest city of Pakistan having a population of more than 1.6 Million. It is the business hub of Pakistan having two busy commercial seaports namely Bin Qasim and Karachi Port. It is the capital of province of Sindh and country’s most of the import and export is done through this busy sea port. It is also ranks 13 in the cities having largest urban building clusters. Karachi is also the center of most of the big financial organizations relating to Shipping, banking and finance, automotive, Textile Industry, pharmaceuticals, Software, entertainment and film making, showbiz, research and development etc. It is also known as the major city of higher education in the country.

Karachi was the capital of Pakistan before the construction of Islamabad by Ayub Khan (Ex-President and Martial Law administrator). But after the creation of Islamabad the capital shifted to it. Karachi has the total area of 3,527 square km which is almost four times larger than Hong Kong. It was being called the “City of Lights” before the menace of load-shedding and terrorism hit it badly. Karachi is host to the settlers relating to different hues and creeds including Punjabi, Pushtun, Balochi, Muhajirs (Urdu speaking migrants) Sindhi and many other people who came to settle in this big city.

It also has the honor that Quaid-e-Azam Muhammed Ali Jinnah the founder of Pakistan was born and also was buried here. The tomb (Mazar-e-Quaid) was also built here.

Karachi was founded as "Kolachi" by Sindhi and Baloch tribes from Balochistan and Makran, who established a small fishing community in the area. Descendants of the original community still live in the area on the small island of Abdullah Goth, which is located near the Karachi Port. The original name "Kolachi" survives in the name of a well-known Karachi locality named "Mai Kolachi" in Sindhi. Mirza Ghazi Beg, the Mughal administrator of Sindh, is among the first historical figures credited for the development of Coastal Sindh (consisting of regions such as the Makran Coast and the Mehran Delta), including the cities of Thatta, Bhambore and Karachi.

During the rule of the Mughal administrator of Sindh, Mirza Ghazi Beg the city was well fortified against Portuguese colonial incursions in Sindh. During the reign of the Kalhora Dynasty the present city started life as a fishing

settlement when a Sindhi Balochi fisher-woman called Mai Kolachi took up residence and started a family. The city was an integral part of the Talpur dynasty in 1720.

The main places of Karachi are Tomb of Quaid, National Museum of Pakistan, Abdullah Shah Ghazi Mausoleum, Karachi Port Trust, Karachi Zoological Gardens, Dream world Resort, Sindbad Amusement Park, Tariq Road market, Sadar Market, Zamzama Clifton, Clifton bay, Clifton Fish Aquarium and many more.
